Eyelid surgery / Blepharoplasty
The eyes are the focus of your face. As skin loses elasticity it stretches. Eye aging is usually the first aspect of the aging process that is noticed. There may also be a hereditary component. In many cases, this excess skin can give the patient a "tired" look. Droopy eyelids are a major reason why some people consider eyelid surgery to remove and tighten excess eyelid skin for a more alert, youthful appearance. Also known as eyelid surgery, Blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. It is popular among both men and women.
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that removes fat deposits, excess tissue, or muscle from the eyelids to improve the appearance of the eyes. It alters the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.
Procedure:
A blepharoplasty can be done under a local anaesthetic injected into the eyelids or under general anaesthetic. The operation takes up to an hour and a half. Excess skin will be removed by working through the incisions. Incisions are made along the eyelids in inconspicuous places (in the creases of the upper eyelids and just below the lashes on the lower eyelids). Sagging skin and muscle will be trimmed and then the incision will be closed. It is very common to perform both eyelid procedures with other facial rejuvenation techniques if indicated and desired by the patient.Upper Eyelid Surgery:
The incision is made in the natural lid crease of the eyelid. After the excess tissue is removed, tiny stitches are placed that will be removed in the office the following week. Because these incisions are strategically placed along the natural contours of the eyelid, the line is barely visible.Lower Eyelid Surgery:
To treat a puffy, hollow, or wrinkled lower eyelid, a lower eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed. Lower lid blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove the excess fatty pads ("bags") and skin from the lower lids. Typically, a fine incision is made just below the eyelashes. This incision may be extended if correction of lower lid laxity is needed. Tiny stitches are placed to secure the tissue at the conclusion of the procedure. These stitches will be gently removed in the office the following week. The best candidates for blepharoplasty are physically healthy and are well informed about the surgery. Your anatomy, including bone and supporting structure, may also affect your candidacy.
Recovery:
After surgery, you will be able to go home the same day, once you are feeling well. Following surgery you will be instructed to rest, keep your head elevated, and apply ice to the affected area to keep swelling and bruising to a minimum. The swelling and bruising will be substantial for the first two weeks following the surgery. You may go about your normal activities, such as shopping, walking, reading, and even working. When patients have realistic expectations while opting for the surgery and closely follow their surgeon’s instructions for recovery, cosmetic eyelid surgery can be a very successful and fulfilling procedure. The benefits that eyelid surgery offers are
