Rhinoplasty/ Nose job
The nose is the most defining characteristic of the face. When the nose is out of proportion, the whole face becomes less appealing.
Rhinoplasty, also known as “nosejob”, is a cosmetic surgery performed to reshape the nose by reducing or increasing its size, removing a hump, changing the shape of the tip or bridge, or narrowing nostril span. The purpose of rhinoplasty is to improve breathing through the nose, to improve the outside appearance of the nose, to straighten and fix a crooked or broken nose and to improve facial balance and symmetry. The surgery is done by reshaping nasal skeleton, which is made of bone and cartilage. Rhinoplasty can correct deformities of the nose by removing, adding, and reshaping bone and cartilage to form a more pleasing appearance without compromising the function of the nose. Deformities due to trauma or congenital defects can also be remedied, as can functional problems like difficulty breathing through the nose. There are two main types of rhinoplasty which will be discussed with you at your initial consultation. Reduction rhinoplasty is used to make the nose smaller, while Augmentation rhinoplasty gives the nose more bulk or makes it larger.
Rhinoplasty surgery is mainly carried out under general anaesthesia in a day care unit, although in certain cases, it may be performed with local anaesthetics. Small incisions are made to assess the tissues, cartilage, and bones, inside and surrounding the nose. After carefully assessing the bones and cartilage, the surgeon removes or adds tissues, in order to achieve the desired surgical results. Tissues can be added from one part of the body to the nose, or instead, fillers can also be used. After the surgeon has successfully placed the tissues in shape and arranged them, some tissues are draped over
the nose to give it final shape. The new shape or structure is then supported by a splint (a device used to immobilise and protect the part of a body) till the nose heals.
Rhinoplasty can be done in open and closed procedure. During an open rhinoplasty, an external incision is made in the columella (the area between the nostrils), whereas during a closed rhinoplasty all incisions are made through the nostrils, inside the nose. The real difference between the two approaches is what the surgeon can see during the surgery and the how the cartilages and bone of the nose are modified. Some benefits of having a closed rhinoplasty is that there is extremely low chance of visible chance of scarring as all incisions are internal and there will be less postoperative swelling.
The amount of time for the procedure varies based upon the individual nose and necessary refinements. Because the nose is an organ which gives both form to the face as well as provides function by breathing, this is a highly delicate surgery which Dr. Shetty performs with a unique level of artistry and medical judgment. The consultation process begins with a discussion about the specific issues and concerns regarding the appearance of the nose. Any functional problems are discussed at this time.
The ideal candidate for rhinoplasty is a healthy person who is not content with their nose and would like to have it improved. If a person seeks to undergo the procedure solely for cosmetic purposes, he/she should have a thorough discussion with the surgeon, and set realistic goals. Patients will be advised to stop smoking for at least two weeks before surgery. Nicotine can inhibit healing.
Following rhinoplasty surgery, pain killers can be used to minimise pain and discomfort. Bruising and swelling will appear around your eyes, with the bruising usually taking two to three weeks to settle. Doctor will place a splint on your nose to maintain the desired result during the initial recovery period.
With the exception of changes associated with aging, results are permanent. Improving the appearance of your nose, can make a tremendous difference in your self-assessment and your sense of comfort inside your own skin. For most patients who undergo the procedure, the results are life changing😍. Patients describe an increase in confidence and boost in self-esteem.
